This place pays homage to the many immigrants who came from different parts of the world to Brazil. Beginning in the 19th century, three million immigrants went through the gates of this building to start a new life in Brazil. The last group to get processed was in 1978.
The Inn of Immigrants, where today the Memorial of the Immigrant functions, was an enormous set of building destined to shelter the just- found ones in its first days in São Paulo. It acted as a base from where immigrants could start a new life in a strange place.
Memorial of the Immigrant occupies only one part of the complex of the old Inn of Immigrants that, was constructed between 1886 and 1888, is one of the few buildings centenarians of the city of São Paulo. It is steeped in old world charm and has a historical significance. It has now become an important landmark in the city attracting visitors.
