This museum is considered one of the most important art museums in Latin America. It contains works mainly by European artists from the 13th century up to the present.

The MASP was inaugurated in 2 of October of 1947 by Assis Chateaubriand, founder and proprietor of Daily and the Emitting Associates and by professor Pietro Maria Bardi, journalist and critic of art in Italy, fond of Brazil. The MASP completed, in 2 of October of 2001, 54 Years of continuous dedicated activity to the improvement of culture in Brazil.

Most of the paintings displayed here are French. Visitors can appreciate the four pictures of the children of Luis XV, painted for Nattier, or the alegorias of the four stations of Delacroix.

It performs many activities like supplying material research in the area of arts, collaborating in the formation of a public come back toward the field of the arts, and to be depositary of the registers that constitute the history of the museum.

In its first 21 years they operated from the Street Seven of April/Center of São Paulo, in the Building of the Daily Associates.
