In 1895, Francisco de Paula Ramos de Azevedo constructed a secondary school.
The elegant building of the Pinacoteca was constructed in 1897. Originally, this was to be the headquarters of the secondary school of Arts and Crafts but later on in 1905, it was inaugurated as the first museum of art. The museum started to function in 1911 with the First Brazilian Exposition of Beautiful Arts. Pinacoteca has seen many ups and downs since its inception.
In 1930, the Pinacoteca almost disappeared. The reason was the Army that had interdicted the museum to use its installations as quarter- general during two months. Later on, in 1989, the College of Beautiful Arts was transferred to Morumbi.
From 1993 until February of 1998, the reform in the Pinacoteca was made, with expenses of approximately R$ 10 million. After the high- cost renovations, it has restored halls, internal patios covered, recouped roof, specific and adjusted illumination, all carried through with the workmanships of Rodin and Miró.
The restored museum now has Brazilian art of the 19th century until contemporary times. This is truly a cultural heritage of great artistic importance for the city of Sao Paulo.
